MRI is shorthand for magnetic resonance imaging, a radiation-free procedure used to visualize various parts of the body in great detail. An MRI scan helps us diagnose diseases and damage from injuries caused by events such as auto accidents and sports participation. We read MRI scans of the brain, vascular system, bones and joints. An MRI scan also allows us to check the health of the breasts (breast MRI) and ovaries in women, the prostate in men and the liver, kidneys, gallbladder and pancreas.

There are two types of MRI machines: closed MRI and open MRI. Open MRI was developed to provide greater comfort for claustrophobic patients or obese patients who do not fit comfortably inside the closed MRI tunnel. Unlike standard MRI, open MRI is open on all sides.

Our radiologist physicians read both regular MRI scans and MRA scans, and they diagnose a wide variety of conditions, injuries and diseases.

Preparing for MRI or MRA

There is little or no preparation necessary for an MRI or MRA scan. For an MRA, you will receive contrast dye just prior to your exam. Just remember that you cannot wear anything metal during your MRI scan because the magnet inside the MRI machine attracts metal. The following objects can cause problems during an MRI or MRA:

  • Body piercings
  • Cochlear (ear) implants, hearing aids
  • Drug pumps
  • Fillings, dental work
  • Heart valves (artificial)
  • Implanted nerve stimulators
  • Insulin pumps
  • Jewelry (e.g. rings, bracelets, earrings, toe-rings, necklaces, ankle bracelets, etc.)
  • Metal fragments (e.g. a bullet, shrapnel, etc.)
  • Metal joints or limbs
  • Pacemakers or defibrillators
  • Orthopedic pins or screws

If you have an implanted device, you should have been given a card or other documentation of the type of device. This should be available before your scan so that we can ensure safety. Being in an MRI scanner with an unidentified metallic or electronic device can be dangerous.
